What Threatens America Today?

What Threatens America Today? (By Gary Patterson)

I believe that we live in the greatest nation in the world! I would not want to live anywhere else. But America is being threatened today.
I know that our history tells of many threats, and many challenges that we as Americans citizens have taken on. In the 248 years we have been a nation, we have been tested and tried, and we have secured the victory over our enemies, and we have stood strong against the threats to take away our values, and what we stand for as a freedom loving nation. That's not to say that the threats are going away. Today in the year 2025, we are still facing the challenges that I want us to look at in this blog-post..

While the Bible offers wisdom that speaks to many challenges facing America today, including division, injustice, and moral decline. It emphasizes these values that we hold dear, and that we must strive to protect and secure.

Unity

We are reminded in God's Word that we are all part of one body, regardless of background
(1 Corinthians 12:12, Galatians 3:28). We are such a divided nation today. One of the thoughts that have been expressed my some celebrities is this: "Just because we don't agree with each other, doesn't mean we have to hate each other!" But the voice of hatred is is so prevalent in our American society today. And with the violence that is happening all over our nation, we see a nation that is angry, and not willing to pursue unity at all. The apostle Paul writes to the church at Corinth about their division.
He encourages them, even though they are many members, with different cultural backgrounds, they are to pursue unity in Jesus Christ. He is the one that we are to live for, worship, and serve. And we are to do it together. We are called (as our pledge of allegiance says) to be "One Nation Under God." Our nation calls us to be legal immigrants, with a desire to be American citizens, and enjoy the freedoms, and opportunities, this nation has to offer. Our nation (that has various backgrounds and culture) calls us to work together for the American cause. Together we are to protect and preserve what our forefathers of this great nation established 248 years ago.

Justice

As believers we are urged to defend the rights of the poor and needy (Micah 6:8, Proverbs 31:8-9)
Here are some ways that we can take action:
Advocacy & Awareness: We are to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Proverbs 31:8-9 encourages us to defend the rights of the destitute.
Legal & Policy Support. We must support policies that protect the vulnerable, ensuring fair wages, and access to healthcare, and social services.
Community Engagement. We could volunteer at shelters, food banks, or organizations that provide aid to those in need.
Personal Action. We must show kindness through direct assistance, donating, mentoring, or simply listening to those struggling.
Faith-Based Guidance. Many Scriptures emphasize justice and mercy, reminding us that caring for the poor is a reflection of God's heart. Jesus said: "Assuredly, I say unto you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My Brethren, you did to Me." (Matthew 25:40)

The Bible Also Warns Of Moral Decay

The Bible tells of how people will become lovers of self, arrogant, and unholy in the last days
(2 Timothy 3:1-5) This is so true of the attitudes and lifestyles of people today.
Here are some examples:
The Loss of Godly Influence: We see our faith being pushed out of public spaces, schools, and government, leading to a decline in moral values.
The Escalation of Violence & Corruption:. The Bible warns against societies where leaders seek bribes and justice is compromised. Many see parallels in modern politics and media.
Selfishness & Materialism: 2 Timothy 3:2 describes people as "lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, which reflects today's culture.
Moral Relativism: Judges 17:6 warns about people doing "what is right in their own eyes", that describes what is happening as traditional moral standards are replaced by subjective ethics.

While the Bible does not mention America specifically, its teachings guide us in navigating national challenges with faith, love, and righteousness. May God help us to meet these threats to our American values, character, safety, and unity. May we be a nation that Proverbs 14:34 speaks about: "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people." GP
